Job Hunt: Aim for less to land on more!

Is it possible that narrowing your job search emphasis will result in more interviews than applying for a variety of positions? That has been my experience as a career coach and resume writing servicesprovider.

Let me start with a business example, and then I'll tell you about a client of mine who had incredible results simply by narrowing her focus.

When we collaborated with Squared Eye to remodel our website earlier this year, we made a huge decision: for the first time, we would clearly define our target demographic. We wouldn't make an effort to appeal to everyone. We'd create a website and copy that appealed to creative and technological workers. It was a little frightening — after all, half of our clientele were neither creative nor technically proficient. Was it possible that we'd lose them? Would we be able to get enough extra clients to make up for it if we did?

The results have been released six months later. We are now attracting considerably more clients who fall into our target demographic. However, we also draw a sizable number of non-believers! We're still writing fantastic resumes for senior operations executives, administrative assistants, and accountants, among other positions. It turns out that by focusing more narrowly, we were able to attract a wider range of people.

I was thinking about this over the weekend as a career adviser and resume writing services provider, since as this terrible recession continues on, I've witnessed an uptick in folks who are broadening their search out of desperation. "I've been a programmer for the last 6 years, although I used to work in retail," they say. "Could you please write me a resume that will be suitable for both?" "I don't care what kind of job I get," or "I don't care what kind of work I get." "All I need is a job."

I know some of these clients are nervous when I tell them that no, we can't build a successful CV without a clear focus. Will they only enhance their odds of remaining unemployed indefinitely if they narrow down their search while jobs are so scarce?

I understand how frightening that is, just as it was for us when we decided to concentrate our business focus. But believe me when I say that narrowing your focus will make you more successful rather than less.
